Ahhh, gosh I love a solstice! It’s a reminder to chill out, reflect and set some goals. And the winter solstice is pretty awesome in that it is the shortest day of the year (the sun set at 5:30!)!
Soooooo how do I celebrate the solstice? Why 108 sun salutations of course! Just as with the summer solstice, 108 sun salutations is a customary ritual to complete on the solstices. Why? Well, solstice’s revolve around the suns positioning, so the sun shall be saluted….108 times!!!! OMG, yes you read that right, 108. Why?? Well, 108 is a pretty significant number in Hinduism and yoga for many reasons: 108 points of energy in the body, the Hindu alphabet has 54 letters in it (times 2=108) and so many others, however the one that resonates with me the most is that 1 stands for the universe or your own highest truth, 0 stands for emptiness and humility in spiritual practice and 8 stands for infinity and timelessness.
A solstice is also a time for reflection, forgiveness and setting some goals. And if you have been to one of my full moon classes, I am HUGE on forgiveness, because holy hell do I ever harbour a lot of guilt!!
During the summer solstice, I took part in one of the many amazing programs that my girl Allie offered over on the Journey Junkie page, and in it, we were asked to write a letter to ourselves outlining our intentions, what we hoped for, and where we saw ourselves by this the winter solstice. I’ve never done anything this that before and was so very interesting how much my goals, intentions and thoughts had changed in these short months. It made me realize just how much I’m changing and growing….cliche I know! But so true!!!
